Merge Tags 

In this article, we’ll walk through the Merge Tags feature located under the Communication tab and explain how to use dynamic placeholders in emails, SMS, and workflows.

The Key Steps

1. Navigate to Merge Tags

Click the Communication tab in the left-hand navigation menu.
Click Merge Tags.

Here, you will see:

  • All default system merge tags
  • The exact merge tag format used in emails, SMS, and workflows
  • A quick reference list for easy copying

2. Understand What Merge Tags Do

Merge tags dynamically insert information into messages.

For example:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Email
  • Phone Number
  • Membership Information

Instead of manually typing a person’s name, the system automatically pulls the correct data when the message is sent.

This allows you to create personalized, dynamic communication at scale.

3. Create a Custom Merge Tag

Click Add Tag.

You will:

  • Enter a Name (e.g., Referral Link)
  • Assign the Tag Code (example: custom.referral)
  • Enter the Value (the actual content that will populate)

Click Save.

You can now use this custom merge tag throughout the system.

4. Use Merge Tags in Messages & Workflows

When creating:

  • A Workflow
  • A Bulk Email
  • A Bulk SMS
  • A Saved Reply

You can insert merge tags into the message body.

Example:

 
 
Hi {{contact.first_name}},

Check out our referral program here: {{custom.referral}}

When the message sends:

  • The contact’s real first name will populate
  • The referral link stored in your Merge Tags settings will populate

5. Why Custom Merge Tags Are Powerful

Custom merge tags allow you to update information in one central location.

For example:

If you use a referral link in:

  • 3 workflows
  • 2 email templates
  • 1 SMS campaign

Instead of updating each message individually, you can:

  • Go to Merge Tags
  • Update the value once
  • Automatically update it everywhere it’s used

This prevents broken links and saves time.

6. Keep Communication Dynamic & Consistent

Merge tags ensure:

  • Messages always include the correct contact details
